Southern Co., AGL Resources secure California regulatory OK for merger

The California Public Utilities Commission this week approved a proposed merger of Southern Company and AGL Resources, bringing the process one step closer to completion.

AGL is the parent firm of Central Valley Gas Storage, a natural gas storage facility in the Sacramento River Valley, making regulatory approval from California regulators a requirement for the merger.

The Southern and AGL customer bases, when combined, will make the combined company the second-largest utility in the U.S., with 9 million Americans using their services. When the merger goes through, which the companies expect in the second half of 2016, the combined company will represent 11 electric and natural gas distribution companies, nearly 200,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 80,000 miles of gas pipelines and electricity generation of approximately 44,000 megawatts.
