NRC to hold open house in Omaha on Fort Calhoun nuclear plant

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff will be available to discuss the performance of Nebraska’s Fort Calhoun Station nuclear plant at an open house 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Doubletree Hotel, 1616 Dodge St., in Omaha.

NRC officials at the meeting will include Fort Calhoun Station’s resident inspectors, who work at the plant full time to ensure its operations comply with NRC regulations. The meeting will focus on 2015 performance and projections for 2016. No presentations will be made, so the public can arrive at any time during the open house and ask questions.

The NRC’s recently released performance assessment said the plan operated safely throughout 2015, so it is not subject to any additional oversight. The NRC will continue with its standard level of oversight, which in 2015 consisted of over 6,000 hours of inspection and review.

“By assessing each plant’s performance in a comprehensive manner, we are able to focus our inspection resources on those areas most in need of attention,” NRC Region IV Administrator Marc Dapas said. “Because Fort Calhoun Station did not have any safety or security issues above very low significance in 2015, we are not currently planning any inspections above and beyond our normal reviews.”
