The International Thorium Energy Organization (IThEO) detailed a recent report from Energy Process Developments Ltd. (EPD) on the feasibility of molten salt reactors (MSR).
The report said the proposed reactor designs were all suitable for development and marketing, with the proper funding, but favored Moltex Energy's Stable Salt Reactor as the most viable choice for development.
The Moltex reactor was selected because of the advantages it holds over other designs, specifically its readiness for development and cost effectiveness. The Moltex design differs from the others in that molten salt is placed into fuel tubes and assemblies, similar to how current fuel assemblies are configured, and it relies on convection to carry out heat transfer.
EPD recommeded that collaborative efforts between remaining designs would likely benefit development. Other designs were submitted by Terrestrial Energy, Transatomic Power, Flibe Energy, Seaborg and ThorCon Power.
