During a speech at the Platts Energy Podium Newsmaker Event this week, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Stephen Burns stated U.S. nuclear plants are making progress with post-Fukushima upgrades.
The NRC ordered all nuclear plants in operation in 2012 and thereafter to make modifications and enhancements to be able to withstand extreme weather and other incidents. This order came after the Fukushima partial nuclear meltdown caused by an earthquake and tsunami.
These
modifications include the addition of backup equipment that can power
and cool reactors in case typical power systems fail.
Burns said U.S. reactors should have this year's expected modifications in place by the end of the year.
The NRC also is evaluating emerging technology that could lead to modifications that would boost safety and operational efficiency at nuclear plants.
