Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom said recently that its branch in Southeast Asia, Rosatom Asia, has become a corporate member of the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS).
Rosatom said it is the first nuclear energy company to join the organization. Egor Simonov, who heads Rosatom Asia, detailed the role that nuclear energy and technology play in the region and for members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in energy, economic and environmental arenas.
“Electricity consumption of ASEAN countries is growing drastically nowadays,” Edwin Khew, chairman of SEAS said. “Clean baseload electricity generated at nuclear power plants can contribute greatly to the sustainable development of ASEAN nations. Even though Singapore is not considering nuclear generation today, it should be aware of nuclear energy developments in the region. That is why we welcome Rosatom Asia into SEAS.”
Rosatom said the company will build two nuclear reactors in Vietnam, the first in the region, and that the company is currently designing a 10-megawatt research reactor for Indonesia.
SEAS was created in 2006 and acts as a business association for companies operating in renewable energy and those developing renewable energy technology.
