Unit 2 at the Peach Bottom Nuclear Generating Station in York County, Pennsylvania, was taken offline on Monday due to an issue tied to a steam valve, owner-operator Exelon said.
Exelon said such repairs could not be completed while the unit is in operation. The company did not specify how long the reactor would be out of service or when it is expected to be back online. Exelon only said that once repairs and testing are complete, the unit will be up and running.
The York Daily Record said radioactive steam was found to be leaking from the valve and that the area where the leak occurred is not an area that is typically accessed by plant staff or members of the public. A plant spokesperson told the newspaper that there was no risk to employees or the general public from this leak.
When operating at full capacity, the plant can generate approximately 2,700 megawatts of electricity.
The York Daily Record said the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s resident inspectors at the plant will be monitoring the situation.
