Unit 2 was taken offline after control rods lost power in the facility, and the unit had to be shut down Saturday until repairs could be made, owner and operator Entergy said. Control rods ensure proper levels of reactor fuel.
Affected rods have since been tested and showed satisfactory performance, allowing the facility to return online for electricity generation. This outage did not impact the operational status of Unit 3 at the plant.
The company also said that in shutting down the facility, all components performed as they were designed to and within regulatory requirements.
The Indian Point facility is capable of generating approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity when it is operating at full capacity. The company said that approximately 25 percent of electricity utilized by New York City and Westchester County is supplied by the Indian Point Plant.
Entergy Corp. owns and operates plants that produce approximately 30,000 megawatts in electrical generation capacity, with approximately 10,000 megawatts produced through nuclear facilities. The company also serves approximately 2.8 million utility customers in Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
