The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on Wednesday that there will be a meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19, regarding an application to build two reactors at the South Texas Project (STP) site.
Nuclear Innovation North America (NINA) has applied to operated two advanced boiling water reactors (ABWR) near the STP Nuclear Operating Co.’s two reactors currently in operation.
Testimony will be delivered by staff of the NRC and representatives of NINA on the staff’s review and whether it supports the issuance of a license.
“My fellow commissioners and I will use this hearing to independently and carefully evaluate whether the NRC staff’s safety and environmental reviews are sufficient to support the necessary regulatory findings,” NRC Chairman Stephen Burns said. “The complex job of reviewing a reactor license application is a critical part of our regulatory and safety mission.”
This meeting will take place at the NRC headquarters in the Commission Hearing Room at Rockville Pike in Rockville, Maryland. The meeting is set to begin at 9 a.m. ET. The meeting is open to the public for observation and will be made available over a webcast for those unable to attend in person.
NINA submitted the application for the proposed reactors on Sept. 20, 2007.
