IAEA completes Morocco's nuclear infrastructure review

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Tuesday that their Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) for the Kingdom of Morocco has been completed.

The INIR team consisted of 11 people representing Spain, the U.K., Romania and IAEA staff members. The IAEA states that the country is considering nuclear energy as a source of long-term energy going into and beyond 2030. Currently, Morocco is dependent on energy imports.

The INIR team met with Moroccan officials on Monday in order to express that the country has made progress in building their knowledge base and experience with nuclear activity. They also provided recommendations on how to move forward with nuclear infrastructure development.

Among these included the establishment of comprehensive nuclear legislation, as well as implementing early training courses and providing support to facilities with human resource development. They stated that establishing stakeholder involvement strategies and implementation would be necessary. The team also stated that a master plan including a timeline of significant activity is recommended.

“[We] will contribute to developing a clear vision of the requirements so that Morocco can take, at the appropriate time, a knowledgeable decision on introducing a nuclear power program, in line with international standards,” Khalid El Mediouri, chairman of the committee tasked with exploring nuclear power options, said.
