The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Friday that it is seeking papers and presentations for a conference on decommissioning and environmental remediation.
The International Conference on Advancing the Global Implementation of Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Programs will be taking place in Madrid, Spain, between May 23 and 27 of 2016. The most recent conference on decommissioning related issues was organized by the IAEA in 2006; the most recent conference on environmental remediation took place in 2009.
This upcoming conference will offer a chance for participants to review and share experiences and information relating to these areas of nuclear energy management.
“Much remains to be done in terms of addressing the legacies from the early development of nuclear energy, including the dismantling of research and fuel cycle facilities, research reactors and nuclear power plants,” Patrick O’Sullivan, a decommissioning specialist from the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy, said. “The same goes for the remediation of sites affected by past uranium mining and processing, by other activities involving the use of naturally occurring radioactive material or by major nuclear or radiological accidents.”
Those wishing to present at this conference will have until Nov. 16 to submit their abstracts to the conference’s website.
