AREVA Inc. on Thursday announced the U.S. market launch of its ATRIUM 11 boiling reactor fuel design featuring an 11-by-11 fuel rod array that, according to the company, offers more flexibility in operation and enhanced safety features.

“Building on decades of international experience, AREVA has developed the ATRIUM 11 fuel to provide customers with a solution that enhances the competitiveness of their reactor operations,” Ron Land, senior vice president of AREVA Inc.’s Fuel Business Line, said. “The introduction of ATRIUM 11 to the U.S. market is another example of how our innovative products support our customers’ operational goals while meeting the ever-increasing industry safety standards.”

Globally, the ATRIUM 11 is used at five nuclear reactors and was named a finalist in the Platts Global Energy Awards for 2014. The fuel assembly has been generating electricity at two U.S. plants since April.

The company states that lead assemblies will be made available for inspections in 2017 and reload supplies for plants using this fuel design system are expected to be available in 2018.
