Southern Co. announced Monday that Unit 1 at the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant has gone offline for maintenance and refueling.
During this time, the second unit at the facility will continue to operate at full capacity.
"Safety is our No. 1 priority during the outage," Keith Taber, site vice president, said. "A safe and successful outage is achieved through the focus of the entire organization – our employees and our supporting partners."
To complete this regular maintenance and refueling activity, approximately 1,300 additional employees of General Electric, Westinghouse, Day & Zimmermann and other partner companies will join plant staff and employees from across the entire Southern Nuclear fleet.
For safety and operations, both nuclear reactors at the Vogtle facility receive regular refueling and maintenance every 18 months. The first unit most recently underwent this process in Spring 2014.
The company did not indicate when the unit is expected to become operational and return to service.
Nuclear operations for Southern Co. are managed by its subsidiary, Southern Nuclear, which operates six nuclear reactors in Alabama and in Georgia. Plants owned by the company consist of the Vogtle plant near Waynesboro, Georgia, the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Power Plant near Baxley, Georgia, and the Joseph M. Farely Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Alabama.
