Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, recently agreed to acquire the 151-megawatt Grant Wind Facility in Oklahoma through an agreement with Apex Clean Energy.
The deal is expected to close in March 2016 when the facility is scheduled to be completed. It will bring the capacity of Southern Company's renewable generation development to approximately 1,600 megawatts of electrical capacity consisting of 21 solar, biomass and wind facilities that have been announced, acquired or are currently under construction.
"Southern Company is committed to the full portfolio and this project is an important step in further expanding our fuel mix," Southern Company Chairman, President and CEO Thomas Fanning said. "Our second wind project and one of Southern Power's more than 20 renewable projects across America, the Grant Wind facility is a smart investment that expands our company's presence in a region with exceptional wind resources."
The Grant facility will consist of 66 wind turbines and is expected to be able to meet electricity needs for approximately 50,000 average-size homes.
This deal follows Southern Power's acquisition of Oklahoma's Kay Wind facility from Apex in March.
Southern Company is a regional energy generating and distribution company that has a total capacity of approximately 46,000 megawatts. It is a leading electricity generator and distributor for the southeastern U.S.
