Bruce Power sets safety grade record

The Bruce Power Nuclear Generating Station announced Thursday that they have set a facility record receiving the highest marks following a recent annual review by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

Unit B at the facility received a Fully Satisfactory rating from the CNSC as an integrated plant and in the areas of conventional health and safety, operating performance and in waste management and security. The A unit received Fully Satisfactory ratings in conventional health and safety and in waste management and security. According to the CNSC, a Fully Satisfactory rating is equivalent to an A+ and a Satisfactory rating is equivalent to an A-.

"We have worked very hard to continuously improve our safety performance and we're seeing those efforts reflected in the CNSC report card," Duncan Hawthorne, president and CEO, said. "The credit for this goes to our employees as they are the ones who show up to work every day with an unwavering focus on safety."

The review process offers evaluations in 15 areas. Unit A received three Fully Satisfactory ratings and 12 Satisfactory ratings and the B unit received four Fully Satisfactory ratings and 11 Satisfactory ratings.

Despite the strong showing during this evaluation, Hawthorne states that there is room for improvement in some areas.

Bruce Power generates approximately 25 percent of electricity used in Ontario and is located in Tiverton.
