IAEA concludes Indonesian review mission

The International Atomic Agency (IAEA) concluded a review mission of Indonesia's nuclear regulatory framework Friday.

The reviewing process involved speaking with staff and discussing the regulatory infrastructure in the country with government officials and representatives from relevant agencies.

The Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS), which was comprised of international experts and IAEA staff, found that the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency was successful in the implementation of the regulatory
groundwork and found that the agency had several good practices.

“The staff of [the Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency] demonstrated great openness and transparency,” Carl-Magnus Larsson, team lead and CEO of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, said. “This positive approach and the results from the mission will help the government prioritize work that can help Indonesia achieve its goals related to nuclear and radiation safety.”

The team also provided the agency with recommendations that would improve regulatory practices in the country. These recommendations included the development of national policies and strategies to ensure safety; sufficient resources in financing and employees able to fulfill its obligations; and the insurance of coordination between the agency and other regulatory authorities.

“The IRRS mission was very valuable and the recommendations provided will help [us] in strengthening its role as a national regulatory body as Indonesia looks to nuclear power for the future,” chairman of the agency Jazi Eko Istiyanto said.
