The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced Wednesday that Victor McCree has been selected to serve as its executive director for operations.
McCree previously was the regional administrator for the Atlanta office of the commission. He will be taking the place of Mark Satorius, who will be retiring at the end of the year. McCree's new role will be effective on Sept. 27.
“The agency is in the midst of change, and I am looking forward to helping ensure that our central mission of protecting people and the environment is maintained during this transformation,” McCree said. “Over the years, I have had the privilege of working closely with our excellent staff in both headquarters and the regions, and I am looking forward to building on those relationships as we move forward.”
McCree
has worked with the NRC since 1988. He began working as an inspector for the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation and continued to serve in higher positions within the commission.
McCree holds an executive MBA from Georgia State University and is a graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy. Prior to joining the NRC, he served as a nuclear qualified submarine officer in the Navy.
“Victor McCree is the right choice to help the agency as it addresses the challenges of a changing regulatory environment and the need to more effectively apply limited resources while still ensuring the health and safety of the public,” NRC Chairman Stephen Burns said.
