The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the Partnership for Global Security (PGS) unveiled their Global Nexus Initiative (GNI) on Wednesday.
This new partnership aims to examine links between climate change, global security issues and nuclear power in a multi-disciplinary fashion and will develop policy solutions to combat global challenges.
“The Global Nexus Initiative represents a new level of real-world collaboration between nontraditional partners committed to breaking new ground to address complex global challenges,” PGS President Kenneth Luongo said. “These aren’t issues that can wait. We need experienced people thinking through credible solutions today.”
Everett Redmond, NEI senior director of fuel cycle and technology policy, said nuclear power will need to be managed in a way that builds confidence on a national and global scale if it is to play a large role in addressing the issue of climate change. Currently, there are 438 nuclear reactors in operation globally, the NEI said. Of these, 99 are located in the U.S.
“The Global Nexus Initiative will send a powerful message about the need to develop creative and innovative solutions to ensure the safe and secure use of existing and new nuclear energy sources to support economic vitality and protect people and the environment,” Redmond said.
The GNI will consist of several meetings and workshops that will lead to a cumulative report of findings and policy recommendations.
