Former U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has been selected to serve as chairman of United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), the group's CEO Ambassador Mark Wallace said Monday.
UANI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy group aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, is advocating against the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action between members of the international community and Iran.
"UANI has led the effort to economically isolate the Iranian regime, and its bipartisan and international expertise makes it a highly respected voice on the merits of the Iran agreement," Lieberman said. "I am honored to assume this new leadership role at this important time."
UANI Executive Director David Ibsen will assume the role of president of the organization and Director of Research Matan Shamir will assume the role of executive director. Ibsen takes the place of Gary Samore, who decided to step down due to a conflict of interest regarding his support for the agreement. He will remain as a member of UANI's advisory board.
"We thank Gary for his commitment, service, and leadership, both during his tenure at UANI and as President Obama's Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction," Wallace said. "Gary has been one of the premier experts skeptical of Iran's willingness to forgo a nuclear weapons capability and his analysis has advanced the discourse on the challenge of preventing a nuclear-armed Iran."
