IAEA chief briefs U.S. senators on Iran nuclear agreement

Yukiya Amano , director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), released a statement on Wednesday after meeting with the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations regarding the Iran nuclear agreement.

Amano detailed the role that the IAEA would play in monitoring the nuclear activity of Iran, and if necessary, would report any discrepancies or violations of the agreement to all parties of the agreement. The pact was reached by representatives of Iran, Russia, Germany, China, France, the European Union (EU), the U.K. and the U.S.

Amano was questioned on a separate roadmap agreement made between the government of Iran and the IAEA. Amano said the roadmap allows for the clarification of current outstanding issues relating to any potential military dimensions in the Iranian nuclear program.

"The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action will enable the agency to implement the Additional Protocol in Iran, giving us wider access to information and sites," Amano said. "It will also require Iran to take other transparency measures. As a result, we will know much more about the nature of Iran’s nuclear activities."

The nuclear agreement would facilitate the lifting of economic sanctions, and the IAEA would be able to closely monitor nuclear activity and implement prevention measures against the development of a nuclear weapon in Iran.
