G4S to provide security services for EDF power station project in U.K.

G4S said on Friday that it has been awarded a 10-year contract from EDF Energy to provide security services at the construction site of the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant project in Somerset, England.

Approximately 300 G4S staff members will be deployed, with the construction of the plant expected to create up to 25,000 jobs in the area during the 10-year project.

"We have had the privilege of working with EDF at Hinkley Point for the past four years, and this contract award is a great endorsement of the partnership we have developed," G4S Secure Solutions Regional Managing Director Doug Hewitson said. "We are delighted to be part of one of the most complex and challenging construction projects in the UK."

The Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station currently has one nuclear reactor in operation. Hinkley Point C will be constructed as the Hinkley Point A nuclear station undergoes decommission activity. EDF said the proposed station will be able to produce approximately 3.2 gigawatts of electrical power from its two nuclear reactors.

EDF said that with the new power station, it will be able to meet 7 percent of the U.K.'s demand for low-carbon electricity, and it will eliminate approximately 9 million tons of CO2 emissions over its expected 60-year lifespan.
