NRC: Nothing in impact report to prevent Byron plant license extension

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) released its environmental-impact report on the Byron Station nuclear power plant near Byron, Illinois, on Thursday, concluding that nothing in the report would prevent license renewal for another 20 years.

This environmental-impact investigation was launched after the plant's parent company, Exelon Generation Co., LLC, applied to extend  licensing for another 20 years.

Part of the NRC's decision is based on consultations with relevant governmental agencies at all levels, an environmental report from Exelon and public comments submitted within the commenting period.

The plant's current licenses on both reactors expire on Oct. 31, 2024, and Nov. 6, 2026, without extensions.

The NRC had published a draft environmental report in December 2014 and held two public meetings on the license-extension application for the surrounding community to allow for public comment.
