International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano released a statement on Tuesday praising the international agreement between Iran and the international community.
"I am confident in our
ability to do this important work," Amano said. "The IAEA stands ready
to undertake the necessary monitoring and verification activities when
requested."
Amano said earlier this week that he and Atomic Energy Organization of Iran President Ali Akbar Salehi
signed a "road map" agreement that will begin the process of
verification of outstanding issues as the agreement is implemented. This
process allows Iran's officials to explain any issues, such as
discrepancies, that are found and how they plan to address them.
Negotiations took place in Austria and included the U.S., China, France, Russia, the U.K., Germany and Iran. In exchange for the lifting of certain economic sanctions against Iran, the country agreed to its nuclear program being strictly evaluated and limited by the IAEA and the international community.
The IAEA will be tasked with verifying that the country is eliminating its current stocks of enriched uranium and will evaluate all aspects of current nuclear operations to prevent nuclear weapons development.
