Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said the agreement between the U.S. and other nations and Iran amounts to an historic accomplishment because it ensures that Iran's nuclear program will remain a peaceful one.
The deal also allows the international community time to respond if Iran’s program proves otherwise.
"This agreement is the result of tireless work from our experts at the Department and the National Labs, our interagency colleagues and, specifically, Secretary of State John Kerry and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman," his statement read.
The agreement, to be implemented in phases, provides and puts in place some provisions for 10 years from now and some provisions for 15, 20 or 25 years from now.
"I also want to thank the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Salehi for his dedication to this process. His professionalism, dedication and commitment to advancing Iran’s nuclear science and education programs, while at the same time building the international community’s trust in Iran’s nuclear program, were key to this agreement," Moniz said. "Being a good deal for America and its allies, the deal does provide global security. Most important of all, this deal exists according to facts of hard science and tough analysis. The facts of the agreement meeting the nuclear objectives set down by President Barack Obama by verifying a peaceful Iranian nuclear program and yielding sufficient time to react if it proves otherwise."
