The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will seek public comment on California's Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant during two public meetings on Aug. 5 as part of the licensing renewal process.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. (PG&E), owners of the Diablo Canyon facility, submitted a 20-year extension on its current licenses on both Unit 1 and Unit 2 reactors, set to expire in November 2024 and August 2025, respectively. The original application was submitted in November 2009. Initial scoping activity from the NRC began and ultimately halted in 2010 at the company's request.
The public meetings will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott in San Luis Obispo on Calle Joaquin Road.
Additional public comments will be accepted in written form through Aug. 31.
NRC officials will be present during the meetings to speak with interested members of the public on an informal basis. Comments made in writing or during the meetings will be included in an environmental impact statement from the commission as part of the licensing process.
