SNC-Lavalin will play a role in the operations of the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) as its joint venture, the Canadian National Energy Alliance (CNEA), was selected as primary bidder by the Canadian Government on Friday.
Within this venture, SNC-Lavalin acts as a nuclear reactor vendor and service provider and will help other companies apart of the venture: CH2M, EnergySolutions and Rolls-Royce.
"In addition to our new build business, SNC-Lavalin provides leading nuclear technology products and full-service solutions to nuclear utilities around the globe," Chief Nuclear Officer and Executive Vice President Preston Swafford said. "Our nuclear team of 1,200 engineering, procurement, construction and project management experts offer customized operations, maintenance and plant life management services, including waste management and decommissioning for light water and CANDU-type reactors."
The CNL performs multiple functions relating to the Canadian nuclear power industry including decommissioning activity, spent fuel transportation and storage, safety training and emergency response among other things.
The Canadian government and the venture will be finalizing the operating agreement within the next few months. This bidding process comes on the tail-end of the Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., the CNL's current parent company.
"CNL is a world leader in nuclear science and technology and its success is important to our nuclear business," Bob Card, president and CEO of SNC, said.
