GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada (GEH-C) and Candu Energy, Inc., will be collaborating on fuel cycle technology research and development following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on nuclear technology cooperation by the U.K. and Canada on Monday.
Specifically both companies' focus will be on possible ways that civil plutonium in the U.K. could be utilized in Candu reactors.
"We are excited by the signing of this MoU that would allow GEH-C's vast experience in commercial production of nuclear fuel pellets and the safe, reliable delivery of nuclear fuel to underpin the use of MOX fuel in new U.K. based Candu reactors," GEH-C President and CEO Mark Ward said. "The signing of this MoU is a very positive step in bringing heavy water reactor technology back to the U.K."
The two countries currently share strong ties among their respective government agencies and in the realms of academia and business.
Candu Energy is currently developing its CANMOX solution which has received credibility from the U.K. Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
Candu President and CEO Preston Swafford said that they are committed in their work with GEH-C and the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories in order to develop safe and reliable methods of repurposing plutonium stockpiles.
