Unit 3 at the Indian Point Energy Center in Buchanan, New York returned to service after an electrical switch at the nuclear power plant failed last week.
The power plant was able to return to service less than 24 hours after the failure, during which the unit automatically shut down. The switch that failed was in a switchyard across the street from the plant. The switch receives electricity from the plant and then sends it to the electrical grid.
Any breaker failure in the Indian Point Unit 3 main generator will cause a shutdown of the plant's main electrical generator as a protective measure. No radiation was released, and the plant's workers and the public were never in any danger.
All equipment and plant personnel performed appropriately during the shutdown.
Indian Point Energy Center maintains two fully operational nuclear power plants, known as Unit 2 and Unit 3. Together they put out approximately 2,000 megawatts of electricity to power thousands of homes, businesses and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
Unit 2 has been online for more than 455 days at full power and with no incidents.
