Westinghouse Electric Company and Neclebra Equipamentos Presados S.A. (NUCLEP) have signed a collaboration agreement to manufacture parts and components for an AP1000 nuclear power plant, they announced on Thursday.
With this agreement, Westinghouse expands its role in the international global energy market and within Brazil's energy infrastructure. The announcement states that the company and its majority owner, Toshiba Corp., have supported energy in Brazil for a long time. This includes work on the construction of Brazil's Angra 1 nuclear power plant and continued technical support for both nuclear and electric power in the country.
“As part of our commitment to localization, Westinghouse looks forward to working with NUCLEP and other partners to further strengthen the technical capabilities and infrastructures of Brazil’s energy sector,” Carlos Leipner, Westinghouse vice president for Latin America, said.
The Brazilian government has announced that they plan to expand the role of nuclear energy in the country; they aim to have many additional nuclear plants and projects through 2050.
“Brazil already has an established nuclear supplier base, and NUCLEP has played a key role in providing quality components and equipment to the nuclear sector in Latin America," NUCLEP President Jaime Cardoso said. "Our relationship with Westinghouse is strong, and this initiative will strengthen and expand our nuclear manufacturing capabilities."
