NRC to hold open house on Wolf Creek plant in Kansas

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will be hosting an open house regarding the Wolf Creek nuclear power plant on June 24.

The open house will take place at the New Strawn Community Center in New Strawn, Kansas. And staff from the NRC will be there from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. CT. They will be speaking about the process of the inspection of the plant, how it performed and will release information on oversight plan for the near future. The two resident inspectors of the station will also be present to address questions and concerns.

“By assessing each plant’s performance in a comprehensive manner, we are able to focus our inspection resources on those areas most in need of attention,” NRC Region IV Administrator Marc Dapas said. “Because Wolf Creek did not have any safety or security issues rising above very low significance in 2014, we are not currently planning any inspections above and beyond our normal reviews."

The NRC regularly inspects all nuclear power plants across the nation. If a power station raises safety or operational concerns, it will garner extra oversight and regulatory procedures. The Wolf Creek plant did not raise concerns in either area to warrant increased regulatory activity.

The Wolf Creek plant is operated by the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp.
