The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced that Matt Young has been named senior resident inspector for the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant in Port Gibson, Mississippi.
Young began working with the NRC in 2006 out of the commission's Region IV office located in Arlington, Texas. He possesses bachelor's degrees in both mechanical and nuclear energy and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Penn State University, and has served as a reactor inspector and performed engineering inspections for the Division of Reactor Safety.
He will be joining Resident Inspector Neil Day at the plant. According to the NRC, each commercial power plant that uses nuclear material has two resident inspectors who regularly conduct monitoring and inspections for their respective facility and its projects.
"Matt Young's technical experience and regulatory perspective will assist the NRC in carrying out its mission of protecting people and the environment and ensuring the safe operation of Grand Gulf,” NRC Region IV Administrator Marc Dapas said.
The GGNPP opened in 1985 and is owned by both System Energy Resources and the South Mississippi Electric Power Association. According to the parent group, Entergy Corp., the plant is able to generate 1,478 megawatts of electricity annually.
