IAEA modeling software assists countries in switching to nuclear power

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been increasingly encouraging the use of its Nuclear Power Human Resources (NPHR) modeling software, which allows nuclear newcomers to simulate their education and workforce needs as they enter the industry. 

The NRHR model was created by the U.S. government, and is freely offered to IAEA member states that are considering or are in the process of incorporating nuclear power into their infrastructure.

It works by taking data about the various facets of running a nuclear program and allowing countries to input data specific to their needs, including the type of reactor, the existing power infrastructure and the regulatory measures in place.

The model has already been used in Turkey, which was able to estimate its personnel needs in terms of numbers and skill sets.

"Turkey is the first newcomer country to use the NPHR model, share their modeling results with the IAEA, and ask for feedback and further recommendations," IAEA Division of Nuclear Power representative Brian Molloy said.

Kenya will be the next member state to employ the NRHR model, and a delegation from the country will be trained on its use early next month.
