The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will have an open house from 5 to 6 p.m. April 29 to discuss its assessment of the 2014 operations and safety of Surry nuclear power plant’s two units in Virginia.
The Surry nuclear power plant, operated by Dominion, is 17 miles northwest of Newport News.
Staff from the NRC will attend the public meeting to answer any questions the general public may have about the safety performance assessment of the Surry nuclear power plant, or the NRC’s overall inspection and oversight.
The NRC said both of the units at Surry were considered safe and operational in 2014. The agency will continue its baseline or routine inspections of the plant, just as the organization does for all nuclear power plants in the U.S.
“NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plant’s safety, and each year we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections,” Victor McCree, NRC Region II administrator, said. “Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.”
The informal open house will be at the General District Courtroom lobby inside the Surry Government Center, 45 School St. in Surry.
