Veolia lands contract with largest nuclear power plant in South Korea

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), the world’s fifth-largest nuclear power supplier, recently awarded Veolia a contract for the next three years.

The agreement, achieved through KHNP’s subsidiaries, Veolia Water Korea and Veolia Water France, obligates Veolia to supply treatments for water and wastewater at Kori Division, the largest nuclear plant in South Korea.

The contract includes the treatment and demineralization of steam freshwater, which supplies steam production pipes. Veolia will also use electrochlorination to treat seawater that supplies the nuclear power plant’s cooling circuit.

In addition, Veolia is responsible for the wastewater treatment facility, which excludes the water that comes into direct contact with nuclear fuel. Veolia operates the facilities, both water and wastewater, that handle over 173,000 cubic meters each day. This amount of water is equal to 55 Olympic swimming pools.

There will be 73 employees handling Veolia operations at the site.

“KHNP’s choice of Veolia is based on our expertise in the treatment of water in nuclear plants and our knowledge in security issues, which are illustrated through our significant contracts in France and Japan,” Régis Calmels, Veolia's senior executive vice president of Asia, said. “This new contract confirms our expertise and reinforces our position in this growth market.”
