NRC to discuss 2014 Farley plant performance at open house

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold an open house April 26 to discuss the agency’s review of the Farley nuclear power plant’s 2014 safety performance and the agency’s oversight plans for 2015.

The 2-4 p.m. open house will be held in the Dothan Downtown Library at 445 North Oates St. in Dothan, Alabama. NRC staff members, including inspectors from the Farley plant and specialists from the Region II office in Atlanta, will be available for one-on-one discussions with the public.

“NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plant’s safety, and each year we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said. “Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.”

The NRC’s 2014 review of the Farley plant’s Unit 1 and 2 found that the facility met the agency’s standards for public and environmental safety performance, and will continue to receive standard baseline inspections conducted at all nuclear power plants.

Operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Co, the Farley plant is located near Columbia, Alabama, about 18 miles east of Dothan.
