Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) officials will discuss the safety performance of the Millstone nuclear power plant with the Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council (NEAC).
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Waterford Town Hall at 15 Rope Ferry Road. The meeting will provide an opportunity to ask the NRC staff questions about the 2014 safety performance assessment.
The NRC’s 2014 inspection of the Millstone power plant shows that its two operating reactors are considered safe. At the end of 2014, Millstone Unit 2 showed no indications of high safety concerns. Due to these positive records, the NRC will only perform standard monitoring of this unit.
Millstone Unit 3 requires additional NRC monitoring because its inspection shows a moderate safety concern that may be caused by the plant’s turbine-drive auxiliary feedwater pump. This pump places water on the reactor after it is shutdown, effectively cooling the reactor.
When officials inform the NRC that it is ready, the NRC will further inspect the unit to guarantee that corrective actions have been taken to remedy the situation. If the NRC inspectors determine that the unit is still unsafe, funding will be closed for the plant.
