The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is holding a public meeting on Tuesday to discuss the results of a regulatory performance review of the Westinghouse commercial fabrication plant.
NRC officials assessed Westinghouse performance activities in the areas of safety operations, radiological controls, facility support and other areas from Jan. 1, 2013, to Dec. 31, 2014. The report will be used as a basis for establishing NRC oversight program for the Westinghouse nuclear facility in Columbia. South Carolina.
“The NRC inspects Westinghouse and other nuclear fuel facilities on an ongoing basis to monitor their performance,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said. “Our inspection reports are publicly available and we also hold regular meetings like this one near each facility to discuss our oversight and answer local residents’ questions.”
Overall, the NRC staff review determined the Westinghouse fabrication plant continued to perform its activities safety and securely in an effort to protect the public’s health while remaining environmentally conscious.
The meeting is scheduled at 4 p.m. in the Red Room of the South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais St. in Columbia. At the meeting, the NRC will present its performance assessment findings on the plant. A staff Q&A session with the public will follow.
