The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) invites the public to an April 9 open house to learn about the agency’s annual safety performance review at the Beaver Valley nuclear power plant.
The open house will be 5-6:30 p.m. at Shippingport Community and Municipal Building at 163 State Road in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.
Owned and operated by FirstEnergy, the Beaver Valley facility operated safely last year and is thus under the NRC’s normal level of oversight. The agency spent about 5,840 hours inspecting the twin-reactor plant in 2014.
“By assessing each plant’s performance in a comprehensive manner, we are able to focus our inspection resources in those areas most in need of attention,” NRC Region 1 Administrator Dan Dorman said. “Because Beaver Valley did not have any safety or security issues rising above very low significance in 2014, we are not currently planning any inspections above and beyond our normal reviews.”
The annual assessment letter for Beaver Valley and information about the open house are available on the NRC website: www.nrc.gov.
