Dr. John Crofts, a British nuclear safety expert, has been named the new Chief Nuclear Safety Officer at Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in Japan.
Crofts still needs to be approved by the Nuclear Regulation Authority; he would be the first foreigner to be placed in an executive position with a Japanese utility company.
"The last two years have been a deeply rewarding experience, and I very much appreciate the trust the company has placed in me," Crofts said. "I look forward to the challenges ahead and to helping TEPCO continue implementation of the Nuclear Safety Reform Plan."
For the past two years, Crofts has been an advisor for TEPCO’s Board of Directors at the Nuclear Safety Oversight Office (NSOO).
As of April 1, Crofts has moved into the executive branch of the company to assume his duties, in addition to his regular head of NSOO responsibilities.
"Dr. Crofts has done a superb job in creating the NSOO and making it a truly effective instrument in TEPCO's growing embrace of safety culture," Lady Barbara Judge, deputy chairman of TEPCO’s Nuclear Reform Monitoring Committee, said. "Giving him executive authority to implement the recommendations the NSOO makes will help TEPCO take the important next steps on its safety journey. I congratulate both John and TEPCO on this appointment."
