Open house scheduled for Three Mile Island 1 nuclear plant

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) said the public is invited to attend an open house on April 7, 2015, in Middletown, Pa., to learn about the safety record at the Three Mile Island 1 nuclear power plant.

The plant is owned and operated by Exelon Generation Co. LLC. Generally speaking, the plant ran safely in 2014, with no inspection findings that were greater than “very low safety significance” on the NRC’s rating scale. Last year, the NRC spent about 5,600 hours inspecting Three Mile Island 1.

"By assessing each plant’s performance in a comprehensive manner, we are able to focus our inspection resources on those areas most in need of attention,” NRC Region I Administrator Dan Dorman said. “Because Three Mile Island 1 did not have any safety or security issues rising above low significance in 2014, we are not currently planning any inspections above and beyond our normal reviews.”

Hours for the Three Mile Island 1 open house are 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Londonderry Township Municipal Building, located at 783 S. Geyers Church Road in Middletown. The annual assessment letter for Three Mile Island 1, as well as the notice for the April 7th open house, are available on the NRC website at www.nrc.gov.
