Ameren Missouri’s Callaway plant license extended to 2044

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved Ameren Missouri’s Callaway Energy Center license-renewal application last week, allowing the energy center to operate until 2044. The original 40-year license would have expired in 2024.

Ameren Missouri’s Callaway Energy Center had to go through a six-year process, which was quite rigorous and included a handful of inspections and design reviews.

“The NRC's review process for our license-renewal application has been extremely thorough and provides verification that Callaway has the proper programs and plans to operate for 20 additional years,” Sarah Kovaleski, Ameren Missouri’s director of design engineering, who provided oversight of the re-licensing process, said. “We are committed to safe, long-term operation of Callaway, and the NRC’s decision reinforces our commitment. We are pleased to have the opportunity to serve our customers, our community and our employees for years to come.”

 As part of the application process, Callaway Energy Center had to go through environmental and technical reviews, as well as various other equipment tests and reviews, which assessed the age and condition of equipment and facilities.
