NRC to host open house on Turkey Point plant safety review

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) will hold an open-house event on March 18 to answer questions about the NRC’s annual assessment of Turkey Point nuclear power plant's safety measures, the NRC said on Monday.

The assessment evaluates the safety of Turkey Point for the past year. Under the operation of Florida Power & Light Co., the plant is approximately 25 miles south of Miami.

Inspectors confirmed that the Turkey Point plant runs efficiently and safely, and does not compromise the well-being of the overall public, nor the environment.

NRC officials will be present at the event to answer any questions or concerns the general public may have, whether the topic is the plant’s safety performance or other issues.

The NRC Region II office sent a letter to plant officials about Turkey Point’s performance in 2014. This letter will be the foundation of discussions on March 18. A copy of the letter has been posted on the NRC website.

“NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plant’s safety, and each year, we take a detailed look at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections,” Victor McCree, administrator of NRC Region II, said. “Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 2905 NE Ninth Street, Homestead, Florida.
