The Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) facility in Erwin, Tenn. has returned to the normal level of oversight and inspection, following an issued licensee performance review led by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
The NRC increased its oversight of the facility back in 2004, due to the plant’s performance and ongoing changes. Over the years the facility has demonstrated substantial and verifiable improvement to NRC officials, which has ultimately led to the lifting of additional oversight services. In addition, the lifting of the Safety Culture Confirmatory Order and the top-tier results of the NRC’s annual report further showcases the NFS facility’s demonstrable improvement.
“Our most recent review of NFS found no areas needing improvement, and we believe the management and staff of the facility now have the appropriate focus on safety and environmental protection required by the NRC,” NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree said.
In returning back to normal oversight, the facility will no longer require a second resident inspector on site, but it will continue to house a senior resident inspector who will conduct examinations alongside regional NRC inspectors from Atlanta.
An open public meeting to further discuss the NRC’s results will be held in Erwin on April 23.
