The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said in its recent 2015 Nuclear Technology Roadmap that global nuclear power capacity should double by 2050 to help stem global warming.

The International Energy Agency and the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency prepared the analysis.

The roadmap looks at trends, and analysts said current energy use and supply levels are unsustainable. The energy agencies said nuclear energy can fill the void as other sources fall short, adding that nuclear energy can lower greenhouse gas emissions and provide power levels comparable to electricity.

The agencies’ scenario is a mix of nuclear and electric energy. The 2050 carbon-limited program would see 40,000 TWh, with 930 GWe of nuclear power providing 17 percent of electricity. The agencies said the annual nuclear plant connection rates must increase to more than 20 GWe. The current output is 5 GWe.
