Sergey Kirienko, the head of Russian State Nuclear Rosatom, met with Qiang Zhimin, the director of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) in Moscow earlier this month to discuss future cooperation between the two companies.
The national powerhouses are discussing the possibility of constructing nuclear power plants in electricity-scarce mainland China. China is primarily interested in using floating power stations to provide energy for islands and offshore hydrocarbon deposits.
In August, it was reported that Rosatom had already proposed constructing two power units on China’s mainland after Rosatom Overseas and the Chinese CNNC New Energy signed a memorandum on constructing floating NPPs.
Russia and China have actively developed a committed nuclear cooperation for many years. With the support of Rosatom, China has constructed two power units for the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, with two other units currently being built. The two parties are also conducting negotiations on constructing the seventh and eighth units of the Tianwan Power Station.
As has been reported earlier, Rosatom and CNNC also signed a protocol concerning possibly cooperating on nuclear power plant construction in third-party countries.
