The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) on Monday released its long-term plans of operation through 2019.

The Compass plan sets guidelines for the organization for the near future as those set in the previous plan come to a close. The plan outlines four major objectives: facilitating the creation and maintenance of a highly trained workforce within the organization; continuing its supporting role and setting performance standards for global nuclear power plant facilities; creating stronger programs within WANO that build credibility; and ensuring that superior standards are passed on to those within the industry, specifically in decommissioning, end-of-life and life extension activity.

Much of the organization’s recent work has been focused on recovery and facilitating safeguards following the Fukushima plant disaster that occurred in 2011.

“As the post-Fukushima projects draw to a close, a fresh approach to the challenges ahead is required. Compass provides a means by which the whole of WANO can be unified in its purpose of continually striving towards excellence in nuclear safety,” WANO Chief Executive Officer Ken Ellis said. “In addition to providing a new strategic direction for the organization, Compass will align the activities within the London and Hong Kong offices and the regional centers, and act as an important communications tool for WANO staff, member staff and our external visibility as an organization.”

The plan also outlines new areas of activity for the organization as the nuclear energy sector continues to grow and change.
