South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. (SCE&G) recently released a YouTube video that documents the construction progress on the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station expansion project, near Jenkinsville, South Carolina.

The facility is currently adding two nuclear reactors, each with a generation capacity of 1,117 megawatts of electricity.

The construction team finished 2015 by installing the foundation for the turbine and generators for Unit 2. This consisted of reinforced concrete reaching 217 feet in length and 49 feet in width. The company said the foundation is supported with 400 tons of steel bars.

In July, the CA01 module was placed in the Unit 2 containment vessel, and the first set of reactor shield panels were installed at the site shortly after the module placement. Unit 3 had its CA04 module installed within its containment vessel bottom head in June 2015.

At the beginning of January 2015, the first set of Unit 2’s steam generators were delivered to the Port of Charleston.

SCE&G shares ownership of the project with Santee Cooper. Once the reactors are completed and operational, the company anticipates that its share of nuclear generation will take up approximately 30 percent of the company’s total generation capacity.
