Westinghouse Electric Co. President and CEO Danny Roderick and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker met with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk Monday.

The meeting focused on the development of a support program that would allow the country’s nuclear fleet to receive significant improvements as well as increase the supply of energy and security.

Since 1994, Westinghouse has been operating within the Ukrainian energy market, and last December, the company and the National Nuclear Energy Generating Co. reached an agreement to increase fuel deliveries to Ukrainian power plants.

“Ukraine relies on nuclear energy for more than 50 percent of its power requirements today,” Roderick said. “Success in this program will increase Ukraine’s domestic energy output while enhancing security and safety, providing for Ukrainians’ electricity needs and the country’s energy integration into the European energy markets’ trading capabilities.”

Westinghouse operates under Toshiba Corp. and manufactures and supplies nuclear plant products and technologies to several international companies.

Ukraine receives the majority of its nuclear fuel and services from the Russian Federation.
