The U.K.’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) said recently that Tony Fountain will become the new chairman of Sellafield Ltd., effective April 1, as Sellafield becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of the NDA.

Sellafield is the site of a former nuclear generation facility that is currently undergoing preparations to be decommissioned and decontaminated.

“Sellafield Ltd. plays a crucial role in safely and securely managing the U.K.’s nuclear legacy,” Fountain said. “I am delighted to be asked to chair the organization and help (Sellafield Managing Director) Paul Foster, his executive team and workforce to progress the decommissioning mission as effectively and efficiently as possible on behalf of the NDA.”

Fountain previously served as the NDA’s CEO from 2009 to 2011 and has worked within the energy industry for approximately 30 years.

“The position of the Sellafield Ltd. chair is a hugely important one requiring someone of considerable experience in industry and first-class leadership skills,” NDA Chairman Stephen Henwood said. “Having scoured the international market, we are delighted to have secured Tony Fountain’s services. Tony will be a huge asset to Sellafield Ltd. in overseeing its delivery of the NDA’s decommissioning mission at Sellafield, the most challenging across our estate.”
