Georgia Power said on Wednesday that a concrete pour has been completed on Plant Vogtle’s Unit 3 “turbine tabletop” near Waynesboro, Georgia.
The process took 15 hours, and Georgia Power said this is the first construction of a turbine tabletop for a new U.S. AP1000 nuclear reactor. This structure will support the weight of the unit’s turbines and its other heavy components. The pour required approximately 250 trucks’ worth of concrete to fill the 2,400-cubic-yard structure.
Currently, two new nuclear reactors are under construction at the Vogtle plant, and it is anticipated that once the two additional reactors are operational, the plant will be capable of producing the largest capacity in the U.S. among nuclear generation facilities.
Georgia Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company, and it owns 47.5 percent of the Vogtle facility. The Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia, Dalton Utilities and Oglethorpe Power Corp. own the remaining interest at Vogtle. Southern Nuclear, another subsidiary, is overseeing the plant’s expansion and will take on operations once the new units are completed.
