The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) recently selected SGI to provide supercomputer support for research and simulations relating to energy.

The SGO ICE X is a supercomputer system that will be deployed at INL in order to enhance its research into nuclear energy and to allow scientists at the lab to enact accurate simulations of what can happen inside of a nuclear reactor.

“SGI is pleased to work with INL once again to provide the SGI ICE X system for its critically important work in energy research and simulations,” Jorge Titinger, president and CEO of SGI, said. “The critical insights discovered through INL’s nuclear reactor simulations are an excellent example of the data-intensive workloads that SGI’s systems help clients solve.”

The system that will be utilized has been recognized as the 97th fastest supercomputer out of 500 models, according to Top500.org. It is also considered to be an energy efficient machine, having been ranked  31 out of 500 global super computer models by Green500.org.

INL is one of many national laboratories that participate in U.S. Department of Energy research projects and development activity.
